Overland-Capable Meets Comfort In This Unique Outpost 29 4×4
Happy post-Fourth of July from your friends at Wanderbox. I just returned from delivering a new 2024 Wanderbox Outpost 29 4×4 build to a customer and wanted to share some pictures and videos that show off this unit’s truly one-of-a-kind features. For those of us who like to Go Out Farther and Stay Out Longer, this rig shows the “art of the possible” in balancing off-grid capability with livability and comfort in a ~30-foot adventure camper from Wanderbox.
Unique feature highlights of this Wanderbox Outpost 29 4×4 include:
- North/south queen bed with dog-friendly stairs/ladder to access either side
- Press of a button reveals large desk with 32″ monitor built in under foot of bed
- 101″ chef’s galley with large stainless sink, 3-burner induction cooktop, Bosch convection microwave and Fisher & Paykel drawer dishwasher
- Large rear sofa with swing-out TV/monitor and lagun table
- Cinderella propane incinerator toilet, dual exchangeable propane tanks
We’ve also provided some of the “backstory” behind this build to show how we work with our customers to meet their goals, from the beginning to the end of their project. This includes the layout of the floorplan, the selection of systems, components and materials, to the location of outlets, lights and accessories.
Please email us with any comments on what you think of this rig’s floor plan and build-out; we’d really like to hear from you!
Goal: Go Out Farther…Stay Out Longer…Live, Work, Play in Comfort

|
Whenever we work with a customer to design their Wanderbox, we start with a simple question: “What do you want to do in your Wanderbox?” Their answers guide the options we present and how we guide them through the design process and ultimately determine what makes their unit different and special. Some want their Wanderbox to be their weekend and vacation off-pavement escape pod. Others want to live full-time off the beaten path while still being able to work remotely. Whatever their response, how they want to use their Wanderbox guides how we apply our knowledge and experience to everything from the truck chassis choice, to suspension, wheels and tires, to our four different toilet type options, to kitchen appliances and various material choices, to ultimately result in a Wanderbox that’s designed from the tires up to meet their specific needs. Each customer design session yields different choices and selections based on that customer’s needs, and taps into what, at the heart, makes Wanderbox unique in the market: our ability to offer people a vast amount of choice in how their off-grid adventure camper functions and feels, while still being very off-pavement capable, extremely livable, built with the highest quality components and materials, and fully maintainable and supportable over its long lifetime. This customer and this rig were no exception. Our initial interviews provided what we needed to help them build their dream adventure camper. THEIR Wanderbox needed to:

Virtual To Reality: Customer
Collaboration Yields Dream Design

|
Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software allows us to work iteratively with customers to explore what various design choices might look like before we build them, both with exterior options and with the layout and feel of interior spaces. We leverage CAD drawings and renderings throughout the design process to dial in the exact look and feel that a customer wants in their Wanderbox. Sometimes the experience is fast. When the customer pretty much already knows what they want, we can go through the entire process in a week or two. Sometimes it takes longer, as various options and material and color choices are modeled in CAD and reviewed. In the end, the process allows us to work iteratively with each customer to make their Wanderbox their own. Every detail and change along the way is documented and signed off on by both parties in a build-specific Design Guide. We utilize a web-based project management app to provide weekly updates on the progress of each build. This project was no exception. We worked together with our customer through each set of choices to ultimately design the off-grid masterpiece they wanted. From the bed layout to the workspaces, from the bathroom design to the kitchen appliances, our design process guided the way to result in a custom rig that meets all of their needs yet also makes a statement about who they are. |
Exterior: Capable with Abundant Storage

This customer owned previous RVs including a Class A motorhome, and leveraged their prior experiences to design a Wanderbox with the exterior look they wanted plus lots of storage, including a 20″ wide by 20″ tall by 7′ deep compartment to store their favorite Gazelle tent.
They modified the exterior main stairs with carpet that quickly attaches using springs so their dog can more easily get in and out of the rig. They wanted the large 41″ tires on the classy Hutchinson wheels to allow them to get off pavement and explore the back roads, and look bad-ass doing while doing so.
Their dream of an adventure camper that is both capable and comfortable was realized through the build process with Wanderbox. The exterior aesthetic says bold yet tasteful and has plenty of storage to take everything they need along with them on all their outdoor adventures.
Large Spa-Like “Dry” Bathroom
to Wash Off and Refresh in Comfort

|
When it’s time to get your morning going or clean up from that awesome afternoon hike, suffering through a cramped “wet” bathroom isn’t exactly what those of us who want a comfortable camping experience desire. Wanderbox is known for its space-efficient bathrooms, which provide just the right mix of comfort and compactness, and this unit is no exception. The customer chose the color and texture of the one-piece WilsonArt Wetwall shower wall panels, picked out the Hansgrohe shower hardware, and opted for the Cinderella propane incinerator toilet to avoid the mess and maintenance of a black tank. The combination of the vessel sink, custom vanity, and side storage next to the toilet, along with the huge shower you-don’t-feel-squeezed-into make the bathroom experience of this unit both aesthetically pleasing and functionally satisfying. |
Rear Seating: Dine, Work, Entertainment with Panoramic Views on Three Sides

| When it’s time to relax and enjoy a meal, or get out of the heat, the rear seating area in this rig is just the spot to accommodate your party. It also can double as a workspace, with power and computer connections to the TV that swivels out to the table for work, or pulls out when used as a TV for entertainment. The TV also connects to Starlink via a Roku unit, so streaming that next Netflix episode or reviewing YouTube videos of that new mountain bike you’re eyeing is right at the click or two of your mouse or remote. |
There is storage under the seat and access to fuses and breakers. Seven large top-hinge upper cabinets provide lots of storage. We made the driver’s side cabinets large enough to store plenty of bottles of wine.
This couple didn’t need extra sleeping accommodations in the rear, but this rear seating design can also easily have an extra bed that folds up if guest sleeping is needed.
It’s a Bed!…No it’s a Desk!…
Wait, it’s Both!!!

| The coolest feature of this build might be the north/south queen bed who’s foot opens via an electric linear actuator to reveal a full-size desk with monitor. Storage on each side of the desk makes this a digital nomad’s dream, and might get you in trouble with the rest of your posse if you don’t learn to pry yourself away from work and go on that mountain bike ride or whatever. Yeah that fast Starlink HP is cool, but Mother Nature is way cooler! |
We love building awesome, innovative uses of space like this, and this design came together really nicely. Kudos to our customer for embracing the Live.Work. Play. Anywhere ethos and challenging us to design this one-of-a-kind Wanderbox Outpost 29 4×4 for them.
Released Into the Wild

| After I delivered this Wanderbox to its new owners, they wasted no time in packing up for an exciting camping journey through the landscapes of southern Colorado. When they got settled, they shared these snapshots of their camping spot and eagerly anticipate countless more adventures with their Wanderbox. |
