John & Linda’s Story

Having previously owned six motorhomes, John and Linda were veterans of life on the road. When it came to purchasing their seventh RV, they knew exactly what they wanted — and what they didn’t want.

They had a very specific picture in mind of how their new 4-season, 4×4 motorhome would look and feel. Wanderbox met their needs without exceeding their budget.

Trading Traditional Coaches for a 4×4 Motorhome

With their Wanderbox marking their seventh motorhome, John and Linda are no strangers to RV life. Before Wanderbox, they rotated through three Born Free RVs and three Foretravels. They had owned top-of-the-line Class As and Class Cs and were known to log up to 8 or 900 miles a day, some days.

Seeking An All-Weather, All-Terrain Expedition RV

John and Linda live in Richmond, Virginia. John is in his 36th year with Morgan Stanley as a financial advisor and a senior portfolio manager. He works in the office but is established enough that he can spend a significant amount of time on the road — only occasionally needing to log into work or hop on a call.

Whenever John’s work allows, he and Linda like to hit the road.

In the past, that has even meant crushing nearly-thousand-mile days in their motorhome to make it to Spokane to visit the grandkids, and back in time to return to the office.

However, the East Coast isn’t exactly known for having mild winters, and John and Linda were tired of being held back by three-season coaches.

Even in a premium motorcoach like their last Foretravel RV, a surprise snowstorm would throw a wrench in their travel plans.

“One day, we were coming home from a trip, and we came over the top of the mountain, and there was snow on the other side, and I drove the last hundred-and-some miles in second gear. It took forever.” John explains, “So I was not really happy with that. And we were snow plowing, because we only had, like, six inches of clearance.”

No longer willing to play roulette with the weather, they began a search for a motorhome that gave them peace of mind. John wanted to feel certain they could navigate inclement conditions safely and get through any terrain they had to.

Why Wanderbox?

After going through six different motorhomes, John and Linda knew exactly what they wanted — and exactly what they didn’t want.

They just weren’t sure which coach could tick all the boxes.

  • 4-season and 4×4 motorhome
  • No cabover bed with a ladder
  • Wide doorways for John’s broad shoulders
  • Specifically located grab-handles to assist with John’s limited mobility
  • No cassette toilet
  • Smaller than a Class A or Super C
  • Specific Interior comforts were a nonnegotiable priority
  • ABSOLUTELY NO SLIDES
“I had one coach out of all previous six that had slides, and we had more problems with the slides than anything else. So, I didn’t want slides.”

With that tall order in hand, John and Linda did their research. They compared most expedition vehicles and premium motorcoaches on the U.S. market.

In fact, they were at Overland Expo to check out another company that built expedition motorhomes when they came across Wanderbox. After some time and careful consideration, John and Linda determined that a Wanderbox was the unicorn they were looking for.

Wanderbox CEO Mike worked with John and Linda to customize an RV that met their needs.

“I’m kind of critical of stuff in some respects because I know what I wanted, and I’ve had a lot of motorhomes. But this one is well put together, and they listened, and all the components talk to each other and work.”

When comparing his finished Wanderbox to similar 4×4 motorhomes they had considered in their search, John says, “I got everything they got and more… For less money!”

Seventh Motorhome’s The Charm

Snow doesn’t hold John and Linda back from hitting the road anymore.

They’ve taken on up to seven inches of snow on the roads, freezing sleet on the roof, and -3℉ temperatures in their Wanderbox.

“We went to Williamsburg for New Year’s. We could have never taken our old coach to Williamsburg for New Year’s.”

Their favorite place to go is Yellowstone National Park. John loves to wake up before the sun, drive around the park, and photograph wildlife, and Linda loves to travel with him — in comfort.

“We’re not 35 years old anymore,” they explain.“We wanted something comfortable to sit inside. We wanted something comfortable to live in.”

When the weather is raging outside — like it was when they sat out a three-day blizzard in the Badlands of South Dakota — John and Linda want to cozy up, play on their iPads, knit, and just enjoy time together in a space that feels good.

Their Wanderbox gives them the freedom to do that. Anywhere. All year.

“We had 70-mile-an-hour wind gusts in a blizzard, and we were stranded there for three days — and it was great!” says Linda. “It was comfortable, it was warm, we had no leaks.”
