A New Kind Of Retirement: Will & Kerrie’s Story

Will and Kerrie are empty nesters with a lot of life to live. When Will’s career ended suddenly, they took a serious look at what they wanted their life to look like and decided a traditional retirement wasn’t for them. They sold everything to take their retirement on the road and now have the freedom to chase their dreams (and their grown kids across the country).

Will and Kerrie are no strangers to downsizing. “ We decided to get away from the corner lot with the greenest grass and the best looking house,” they say.  Step by step, they’ve worked towards freeing themselves from the pressure of feeling like “you have to be keeping up with the Joneses.”

They raised their kids in Colorado. They had what many people strive for—a 5,000 sq. ft. home, a garage full of toys, and a couple of acres of land. But maintaining everything they had worked so hard for was more work in itself. It kept them busy and took precious time away from what mattered.

Their family. Their passions. And time to just be.

They began dipping their toes into living in smaller spaces and had a realization. Smaller material responsibility equals a much bigger life.

The Path To Retirement on the Road

Kerrie has worked as a nurse for over 25 years and recently began working remotely. After over 30 years as a VP in construction, Will’s company closed its doors unexpectedly, pushing him into early retirement.

The timing was serendipitous. Will and Kerrie had already sold their house. Their Wanderbox was being built. With Kerrie able to work from the road and Will eager to shift into content creation, the two began to reimagine what retirement could look like.

Why Wanderbox?

Kerrie was the one who found it. Once they decided to make the jump to life on the road, she dove headfirst into research and stumbled across a pre-owned Wanderbox listed for sale.

What stood out initially?

Customization. Quality. And a price that didn’t feel absurd.

Other expedition trucks flaunted “luxury finishes” that seemed unnecessary and impractical. Wanderbox delivered capability and craftsmanship without the jaw-dropping cost.

But for Kerrie, what really caught her eye was the fact that she could have a workspace built to spec just for her.

“My huge thing was making sure I had a comfortable workspace,” says Kerrie, “and they worked really hard for me and with me to make that happen.”

For Will, their Wanderbox is not only his vehicle to becoming a content creator, but it also enables his passion for overlanding on his motorcycle. Their rig is complete with a hydro lift and a garage compartment under the kitchen to haul Will’s adventure motorcycle and their mountain bikes.

Despite all that added weight, the detailed step-by-step design process gave Will and Kerrie peace of mind knowing they “don’t have to worry about breaking axles or wearing bearings out or straining the vehicle,” when they’re beating it up off-road. “That was huge for me, being in the construction industry my entire life,” says Will.

From Keeping Up With The Joneses to Keeping Up With Their Kids

Travel and the outdoors had always been part of Will and Kerrie’s story. They share treasured memories of family road trips and spent a lot of time outdoors as their kids were growing up. They had owned fifth wheels, ATVs, and pop-ups.

They knew that cruising back roads and getting off the grid was how they loved to travel.

Will and Kerrie had kids at a young age.

They’re only in their fifties. All their kids are grown now and spread out across the country. Their Wanderbox gives them the freedom to spend time with their kids—wherever they are—and take their home with them.

No complicated logistics. No paying for flights or booking hotels.

They don’t have grandkids yet, but they’re looking forward to being “the coolest grandparents” when they come to visit in their adventure rig.

Less Stuff, More Savoring

Soon, Will and Kerrie will be hauling out to Moab in their new home for their oldest daughter’s wedding. They’re looking forward to checking out the national parks and hopping on their mountain bikes whenever they feel like it.

But more than anything else, what Will and Kerrie are looking forward to is “being in a place where we can park, where we just have serenity, peace, and quiet and being able to get away from all the noise of the city.”

They’ve named her Wanda the Wanderbox. She’s their invitation to slow down and soak in each day and every starry night sky.

Take the scenic route, explore small towns, and support local businesses.

Reconnect with themselves and tune out the noise of the world.

How do they describe Wanda?

“Astonishing. Our dream on wheels.”

What sounds like a pipe dream—something too good to be true for most—will simply be another Tuesday for Will and Kerrie.

“We’re at the point where we’re just going to live our lives and be free. It’ll be simple again.”
